Rheumatoid Arthritis
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the joints, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and potential joint damage. The exact cause of RA is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors that trigger the immune system to attack the synovium (the lining of the joints).
Signs and Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Joint pain and swelling, often symmetrical (affecting both sides of the body)
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
- Fatigue and malaise
- Loss of appetite
- Fever and weight loss
- Joint deformities in advanced stages
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Rheumatoid Arthritis
In TCM, rheumatoid arthritis is often viewed as a result of wind, dampness, and heat invading the body, leading to obstruction and stagnation of Qi and blood in the joints. TCM treatments aim to eliminate pathogens, alleviate pain, and restore balance to the affected areas.
TCM Diagnosis and Approaches:
- Wind-Damp-Heat: The invasion of external pathogens can lead to inflammation and pain in the joints.
- Herbs: Formulas like Sheng Jiang San (Fresh Ginger Powder) are commonly used to dispel wind-dampness and reduce inflammation. Key herbs include Jiang (Ginger) and Fu Ling (Poria).
- Qi and Blood Stagnation: Stagnation of Qi and blood in the joints can contribute to pain and swelling.
- Acupuncture: Acupuncture points such as LI 4 (He Gu), ST 36 (Zu San Li), and SP 6 (San Yin Jiao) are utilized to promote circulation, alleviate pain, and restore balance.
Lifestyle Recommendations
- Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Consuming a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, and vegetables can help reduce inflammation. Avoiding processed foods and sugars is also recommended.
- Regular Exercise: Engaging in low-impact exercises, such as swimming or walking, can help improve joint flexibility and reduce stiffness.
