Psoriasis

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition characterized by the rapid growth of skin cells, leading to thick, red, scaly patches on the skin. It can occur on various parts of the body, including the scalp, elbows, and knees. Psoriasis is often associated with other health conditions, including arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Psoriasis

- Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales

- Dry, cracked skin that may bleed

- Itching, burning, or soreness

- Thickened or pitted nails

- Swollen and stiff joints (in cases of psoriatic arthritis)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Psoriasis

In TCM, psoriasis is often associated with imbalances in the liver, spleen, and kidney systems, leading to damp-heat accumulation in the skin. TCM approaches focus on clearing heat, resolving dampness, and nourishing blood and Yin.

TCM Diagnosis and Approaches:

- Damp-Heat Accumulation: The presence of damp-heat can lead to skin inflammation and the development of psoriasis.

- Herbs: Formulas like San Huang San (Three Yellows Powder) are used to clear heat and resolve dampness. Key ingredients include Huang Lian (Coptis), Huang Bai (Phellodendron), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena).

- Blood Deficiency: Insufficient blood can lead to dryness and exacerbate skin conditions.

- Acupuncture: Points such as Spleen 6 (San Yin Jiao), Liver 3 (Tai Chong), and Stomach 36 (Zu San Li) are utilized to nourish blood, clear heat, and promote skin health.

Lifestyle Recommendations

- Moisturizing Treatments: Regularly applying moisturizing creams or oils can help soothe dry skin and reduce flaking.

- Dietary Therapy: Following an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids can help manage psoriasis symptoms.
